Recruitment for the State Board of Sign Language Interpreters

​The State Board of Sign Language Interpreters (Board), established and regulated by the Health Licensing Office (HLO), is currently recruiting for the following vacant Board member position(s): 

  • One (1) licensed interpreter who represents an Oregon state professional organization for sign language interpreters.
  • Two (2) Deaf / Deafblind / Hard of Hearing members who represent an association in Oregon that promotes and protects the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing.
The Board licenses and oversees the practice of sign language interpretation and how it relates to consumer protection. Sign language interpreters provide professional interpreting services to individuals who are Deaf, Deafblind, or Hard of Hearing in a variety of settings. 

Service on the Board allows members to contribute their education, knowledge, and experience when considering decisions and recommendations related to the policy, administrative rules, consumer safety and disciplinary matters within the sign language interpreter profession.
 

The licensed sign language interpreter opinion is necessary to:

  • Provide input on industry standards;
  • Offer technical expertise; and
  • Provide a professional perspective on how policy changes affect the profession.
The Deaf, Deafblind, Hard of Hearing consumer opinion is necessary to:
  • Provide the consumer perspective on strategic decisions;
  • Give feedback on the way current services are experienced by consumers; and
  • Raise new issues of concern to consumers. 
Members are appointed to three-year terms and may be entitled to compensation for attending meetings. The Board meets four times a year and for convenience members can attend in person or through Zoom. Meetings are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. to encourage greater attendance.
