Oregon utilizes the examinations of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for EMT, AEMT and Paramedic certification testing. The examination developed by Oregon is utilized for licensure testing at the EMT-Intermediate level. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to participate in the exam process for the level of training completed.
Upon successful completion of the examination process at the EMT, AEMT or Paramedic level, the candidate is eligible to apply for National Registry certification. Candidates who are Nationally Registered will then qualify to apply for Oregon licensure. Upon successful completion of the examination process at the EMT-Intermediate level, the candidate is eligible to apply for an Oregon license.
A person must take and pass both the written and practical licensure examinations within 24 months after completing an approved course. Candidates who fail to become licensed within 24 months must retake the entire EMS Provider training program for the level of licensure being tested.
EMT and EMT-Intermediate exams are coordinated through the educational institutions. When an application to conduct a course is submitted by a school, a date is selected for the class licensure examination. If a candidate is unsuccessful during an exam, the candidate's course director will schedule another exam in which he/she may participate.
Advanced EMT and Paramedic examinations are coordinated and conducted through the Oregon Health Authority, EMS Section.
