About the Oregon Commodity Commissions

Almost 200 farmers, ranchers, food processors and packers, commercial fish harvesters, and public members serve on Oregon’s 22 commodity commissions. Commissioners are Oregon public officials who volunteer their time for the economic betterment of the commodity.

Commodity commissioners carry out important decision-making for their particular commodity.

Commissioners determine the projects and programs that each commission funds with assessments that growers and harvesters pay. Each year, commissioners develop and approve a budget using their commodity’s assessments for non-branded promotion, research, and education programs.

The Director of the Oregon Department of Agriculture is responsible for appointing commissioners. The director’s decision to appoint is based on a number of factors including:

  • Applicant experience

  • Commitment to service

  • Industry counsel

Commodity Commissioner Recruitment Schedule

By mid-March each year, the commissioner positions and positions numbers that are open for appointment will be posted on this page. The exact deadline for applications will be posted on this site. As a general rule, the deadline is late April-early May each year. Appointees will receive a letter from the Director in June. All new terms begin July 1.
