Oregon Public Health Reports No Health Risk
The Oregon Public Health Division and the Environmental Protection Agency continue to track levels of radiation linked to the nuclear power plant event in Japan.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has air monitors in Portland and Corvallis, OR. Air samples are collected twice per week and shipped to the EPA for further analysis. These monitors can detect increases in radiation levels that would identify a potential threat to the public's health.
For a period of time after the Japanese nuclear reactors were damaged, RPS analyzed the air samples collected in Portland, OR for gamma emitting radionuclides prior to shipping the air filter to the EPA. The results from the analyses were posted to the website twice per week. The results have continuously shown no elevated readings since May of 2011. As a result, RPS has chosen to discontinue posting these results. Detailed test results by location can be seen on the EPA RadNet site.
Should elevated levels of radiation be detected, RPS would again start posting air monitoring results to the website.
