Board of Sign Language Interpreters - Legal Sign Language Interpreter - License Information

Licensure Information - Legal Sign Language Interpreter Temporary License

  • In order to obtain a legal sign language interpreter temporary license, you must first obtain a supervisory sign language interpreter temporary license or a generalist sign language interpreter temporary license. You can apply for both temporary licenses at the same time. The applications are available under the "Forms" header below.
  • Only a person holding a legal sign language interpreter license under HB 2696 (2023), Section 7, may provide sign language interpreter services in a legal setting.
  • A legal setting does not include proceedings in federal courts.
  • A legal sign language interpreter temporary license becomes invalid when one of the following occurs, whichever occurs first: June 8, 2024, or the HLO grants or denies the license holder a license under HB 2696 (2023).
  • The legal sign language interpreter temporary license may not be renewed.
  • The issuance or the licensee's holding of a legal sign language interpreter license does not supersede, replace, or negate the need for the license to comply with other laws requiring licensure or registration, or competent sign language interpreter services.

How to Apply - Application Requirements for the Legal Sign Language Interpreter Temporary License

  • Meet the requirements of Oregon Administrative Rule, Chapter 331, Division 30.
  • Submit a completed application (see applications under the "Forms" header below).
  • Submit two forms of original identification issued by a government agency. Acceptable identification options can be found under Oregon Administrative Rule, Chapter 331, Division 30.
  • Submit proof of being at least 18 years of age.
  • You must hold an active supervisory sign language interpreter temporary license or an active generalist sign language interpreter temporary license in order to obtain a legal sign language interpreter temporary license. You can apply for both temporary licenses at the same time. The applications are available under the "Forms" header below.
  • Attest to completing 40 hours of education on legal interpreting or attest to holding a credential from the list provided under "Application Requirements" on the Legal Sign Language Interpreter Temporary License Application (see applications under the "Forms" header below).

Fees

There are no fees required for the HLO temporary license; however, once the Board has Oregon Administrative Rules in place, temporary license holders will need to reapply for permanent licensure by the Board. At that time, there will be a fee for application processing and a fee for the permanent license issued by the Board.
