2020-2024 SHIP Priority: Institutional Bias

Institutional Bias

Institutional bias is defined as the tendency for resources, policies and practices of institutions to operate in ways which advantage white, heterosexual, cis-gendered, able-bodied individuals and communities. This discrimination results in adverse health consequences for minority groups, such as people of color, people with low income, people with disabilities and people who identify as LGBTQ+.

To begin to address these issues: “Institutional Bias” has been defined as one of five priorities in the 2020-2024 SHIP. Each priority will be addressed by a subcommittee that will use their experience, expertise, and capacity to create a SHIP that identifies evidence based and innovative strategies for policy, system and environmental changes. Members were recruited based on learned or lived understanding of the topic area, genuine interest in the success of the SHIP, and ability to actively participate in the SHIP process.
