Breastfeeding Training

Breastfeeding Basics

Target audience

New WIC certifying staff, breastfeeding peer counselors, community partners

Description This interactive training focuses on participant-centered counseling and support for breastfeeding families in WIC. Topics include breastfeeding barriers and myths, milk production basics, managing early breastfeeding challenges, breastfeeding positions and attachment, solutions for common breastfeeding problems, appropriate uses of breastfeeding aids and pumps, navigating the first year of breastfeeding, and the weaning process.
Prerequisites
  • WIC Level 1 Breastfeeding Course - 2 modules (~1.5 hours)
  • WIC PCE Course - Introduction + 9 modules (~2.5 - 3 hours)
  • WIC Baby Behaviors - first 6 of the 9 modules (~1.5 hours)
All courses are available through iLearn Oregon.

  • Maximum enrollment is 20, minimum of 4 WIC staff required to prevent class cancellation.
  • Non-WIC staff (health department staff, community partners) are invited to attend the training if space is available. The number of partnering staff cannot exceed the number of WIC staff and no more than 2 partner staff from the same agency can attend at the same time.
  • Note: Training may be cancelled if less than 4 WIC staff are registered. Staff who are registered for training will be notified one week prior to class date if training is cancelled.

Certifier Academy

Level 3 Certifier Academy
Target audience WIC Certifiers (CPAs) who have completed all Level 1 and 2 training modules and online courses, have been working as a Certifier for 6 months or more, and have not attended both RENEW trainings.
Description

The academy is designed to build more advanced nutrition-focused counseling skills. It consists of 2 parts:
  • A 7-month learning cohort conducted via Skype;
  • A 1-day face-to-face training

  • Agencies can request reimbursement for travel and lodging when attending the face-to-face training in Portland. 
  • After staff participate in the 4-hour kick-off Skype call, your agency will receive a grant adjustment of $120 to help offset the cost of staff time.

TWIST Clerical Training

  • Course includes a brief overview of the WIC program, services that WIC provides for participants and the role of WIC clerical staff. Hands-on training will provide clerks and support staff the skills needed to navigate TWIST. First day: staff will learn to search for participants, update demographic information, complete the intake and income screens, and issue eWIC cards and benefits. Second day: schedule participants into a variety of appointments, print the correct notices, and gain experience solving various food benefit issues. Staff will leave the training able to perform transfers, change WIC ID numbers, and terminate participants.
  • Note: Training may be cancelled if less than 4 staff are registered. Staff who are registered for training will be notified one week prior to class date if training is cancelled.

TWIST CPA Training

(For WIC staff only)

  • Course includes a brief overview of the WIC program and the services that WIC staff provide for participants. Hands-on training will provide new certifiers with skills they need to navigate TWIST. Certifiers will be able to complete a certification and assign a food package using TWIST and document information in a participant's TWIST record. They will be able to select the appropriate nutrition education contact and make requests or schedule appointments. They will understand their role in providing food benefits. They will have a good overall understanding of how TWIST is used in the clinic to provide participant services. Course serves as a good companion to the Nutrition Training Modules and on-the-job training.
