Nurse Faculty Expansion Overview
Faculty shortages at nursing schools across Oregon have been identified as a major barrier to have enough education capacity to prepare students to enter the field and improve nurse supply. The Oregon Legislature passed
House Bill 3396 in 2023, which provided OHA with $5 million to fund the
Oregon Center for Nursing to address this issue. The Oregon Center for Nursing created the Retaining and Elevating the Nurse Education Workforce (RENEW) Initiative, a four-year statewide program that makes grants to Oregon’s public nursing education programs to increase nurse faculty recruitment and retention.
RENEW Initiative Goals
The RENEW Initiative will address nurse faculty shortages through three goals:
- Improve Faculty Recruitment: Interview stakeholders, develop strategies, and support recruitment projects.
- Enhance Faculty Retention: Conduct interviews, analyze data, and implement retention projects.
- Maximize Impact: Disseminate findings through reports, webinars, and presentations.
