What Is Sexual and Reproductive Health Care?

OHP covers a broad range of reproductive and sexual health services, including annual wellness visits, birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, prenatal care, sexually transmitted infection testing, sterilization, and abortion. All services OHP covers are free.

These services support sexual and reproductive health. Sexual and reproductive health means that a person has complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to their reproductive system and its functions. In everyday life, this means that people are able to have satisfying and safe sex lives, have healthy pregnancies and births, and decide if, when and how often to have children.

OHP covers all FDA-approved birth control methods, including:

Birth control pills
Condoms (with a prescription)
The birth control patch, ring, and injection
Emergency contraception
Diaphragms
Spermicide
Implants
IUDs, including immediate post-partum IUD
Sterilization services, including vasectomy and tubal ligation (“getting tubes tied")

You can get birth control prescribed at a pharmacy without needing an appointment. This includes birth control pills, condoms and emergency contraception.

Counseling and/or medication to prevent STIs, including:

Pre-exposure and post-exposure medication to prevent HIV and AIDS (known as PrEP, PEP and doxyPEP). Learn more about PrEP and PEP, or find a provider or pharmacist who can prescribe PrEP or PEP and counseling for AIDS and HIV.
Vaccination for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Regular screenings and tests such as pelvic exams, pap tests and mammograms
Pregnancy testing
Screenings for STIs, including HIV
Check-up and treatment of sexual health concerns, such as painful sex or periods, erectile dysfunction, or low sex drive
Vaginal infections
Fibroids
Endometriosis

OHP has limited coverage of screening and treatment for infertility. This may include evaluation, medication management and ovulation induction.

OHP does not cover in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or fertility preservation services.

Preparing for pregnancy:

Health screenings and treatment for problems that might affect pregnancy, such as diabetes or high blood pressure
Counseling on nutrition and habits to support conception and a healthy pregnancy

OHP covers a full range of services during and after pregnancy, including:

Routine prenatal appointments
Ultrasounds
Labor and delivery
Support from a birth doula
Postpartum care

OHP also covers additional dental and vision services while you are pregnant, and for one year after pregnancy.

For Members Under Age 18:

In Oregon, minors of any age can consent to the following services without parent or guardian consent:

Birth control
Prenatal, postnatal and delivery care
Testing and treatment for STIs.

Minors under 15 cannot consent to abortion or voluntary sterilization without parental permission, except in certain circumstances. Learn more on OHA's Abortion Access website.

Minors age 15 and over can consent to any medical service without parent or guardian consent.

To Get Care:

Most OHP members get their benefits through a local coordinated care organization (CCO). Call your CCO and ask about reproductive health providers in your area, or use your CCO's provider directory. You can find contact information and directories for each CCO here.

If You Don't Have OHP:

The Reproductive Health Equity Act requires private health plans to cover reproductive health services. It also ensures ways to offer reproductive health services even if you are uninsured.

Contact your private health plan to learn more about their covered services and how to find providers.

If you have or need to be screened for breast cancer or cervical cancer, your provider can refer you to Screenwise and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Programs for testing and treatment.
