Reports should be made when any of the following is true:

  • TB is one of the primary differential diagnoses. This often occurs when:
    • Signs and symptoms of TB are present and/or
    • The patient has an abnormal chest x-ray consistent with TB or
    • The patient is started on multi-drug therapy for TB
  • ​When the patient has a positive culture for M. tuberculosis complex (e.g. M. tuberculosis, M. bovis, M. canetti, M. africanum)
  • When a pathology report is consistent with tuberculosis

When a TB case is first reported, please open a case report in Orpheus and attach Chest X-ray/CT readings. Update the case record upon TB verification and case closure.


The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory provides information on TB diagnostic testing including QuantiFERON, smear, GeneXpert MTB/RIF, culture and drug susceptibility testing. 

Authorization for GeneXpert Negative Sputum Testing.

Per OAR 333-018-0018, culture positive isolates must be submitted to the OSPHL for susceptibility and genotyping.​

Incentives and enabler funding is available to all local health departments to assist with case management. Requests will be prioritized as indicated in the below protocol.

There are many excellent web based TB trainings available on a variety of topics from the CDC and regional TB training centers.

  • The TB Training Plan - a modifiable document with links to a variety of online TB trainings. The document's intended use is to assist LHDs with developing training for staff new to TB.

The TB Program OHA provides clinical TB consultation, assistance with contact investigation, interpretation of TB related regulation and advice on TB infection control for the public and private sectors free of charge.
