Vehicles Tested and Exempted


Notice: On Friday, July 3, Oregon Driver and Motor Services’ computer system will be down as it undergoes an upgrade. DEQ’s clean air stations will continue conducting emissions testing and providing certificates. However, customers cannot renew their registration or tags until DMV’s system is back online Monday, July 6. Then, customers can renew their registration and tags at DMV2U or at a DMV Express Kiosk. Oregon's State Implementation Plan considers emission reductions needed in specific geographic areas and includes the following testing requirements for the Portland and Medford metro-areas:

Vehicles required to test in Portland

  • All 1975 and newer cars, trucks, vans, motor homes and buses powered by gasoline, alternative fuels (such as propane) or hybrids registered within the Portland testing boundaries
  • All 1975 and newer diesel powered vehicles with a manufacturer's gross weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less (This includes all passenger cars and most light-duty trucks) registered within the Portland testing boundaries. If your diesel vehicle qualifies for this exemption, but you receive a DMV registration renewal, please visit a Clean Air Station for assistance

Vehicles required to test in Medford

  • All cars, trucks, vans, motor homes and buses powered by gasoline, alternative fuels (such as propane) or hybrids 20 years old or less and registered within the DEQ Medford area boundaries
  • All diesel powered vehicles 20 years old or less with a manufacturer's gross weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less (This includes all passenger cars and most light-duty trucks) registered within the DEQ Medford area boundaries. This includes all passenger cars and most light-duty trucks
