2020-2024 SHIP Priority: Adversity, Trauma and Toxic Stress

Watch 2020-24 SHIP Subcommittee Webinar recording now!

Adversity, Trauma and Toxic Stress

Adversity, trauma and toxic stress include abuse and neglect, living in poverty, incarceration, family separation, and exposure to racism and discrimination. These events have a lifelong effect on health and are correlated with things like substance use, suicide and even some cancers.

To begin to address these issues: “Adversity, Trauma and Toxic Stress” has been defined as one of five priorities in the 2020-2024 SHIP. Each priority will be addressed by a subcommittee that will use their experience, expertise, and capacity to create a SHIP that identifies evidence based and innovative strategies for policy, system and environmental changes. Members were recruited based on learned or lived understanding of the topic area, genuine interest in the success of the SHIP, and ability to actively participate in the SHIP process.
