Abbreviated School Day Program Guidance

On this page, you will find guidance from the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) on the appropriate use and implementation of Abbreviated School Day Programs for students with disabilities. The guidance is intended to help districts, families, and educators understand the federal and state requirements, best practices, and responsibilities involved when a student is placed on an Abbreviated School Day Program.

The goal of any Abbreviated School Day Program placement must be to support the student’s return to a full-day schedule as soon as possible, through a process that centers student needs, protects parent and student rights, and complies with state and federal law.

This guidance represents ODE’s current best thinking on the implementation of ORS 343.321 to 343.333. This guidance does not constitute legal advice, nor should it be considered definitive or legally binding. ODE strongly recommends that school districts review the law carefully and consult with their own legal counsel to understand their obligations.
