Understanding Oregon's Statewide Assessment System and District/School Performance
The Oregon Department of Education provides information and resources to help students and families better understand the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS), student results, and district or school performance information.
Statewide assessments provide one source of information about student learning. Students may also participate in a survey that helps schools better understand students’ educational experience and school environment. Together with classroom learning, these resources can provide information about how your child is progressing over time.
The resources below can help you understand state testing, interpret student score reports, and learn about district and school performance.
Students take assessments and surveys throughout their school experience. The Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) tools help teachers, schools, and districts understand student learning and growth.
- OSAS summative tests are given each year and include the following selected subjects and grades:
- OSAS English Language Arts (Grades 3 - 8 and 11)
- OSAS Mathematics (Grades 3 - 8 and 11)
- OSAS Science (Grades 5, 8, and 11)
Note: The Oregon Extended Assessment (ELA, Math, or Science) is available as an alternate test for eligible students with significant cognitive disabilities
- Additional assessments are provided for specific student groups:
- Universal Screener for Risk Factors of Dyslexia (Kindergarten and new First Graders)
- National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) for selected students (Grades 4 and 8)
- English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) for students identified as English learners (Grades K - 12)
Note: The Alt-ELPA is available as an alternate test for eligible students with significant cognitive disabilities
- Oregon’s Statewide Assessment System also includes additional measures that support a more complete understanding of student learning and experiences:
- Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey (Grades 3 - 11)
- Local Performance Assessments in Mathematics, Scientific Inquiry, Speaking, and Writing (Grades 3 - 8 and at least once in high school)
State assessment results are one measure of your student's learning and progress. Families can use score reports and related resources to better understand strengths, identify areas for support, and consider results alongside classroom work, grades, and teacher feedback. Please use the test result as a part of ongoing conversations with educators about your child’s learning.
- Please refer to this guidance document, Appropriate Uses of OSAS Summative Data: English / Spanish.
The SEED Survey and NAEP results are only shared by groups of students, and individual results are not released.

How can I support my student?
The Oregon Department of Education collects information from schools and districts across the state. This information helps families, educators, and communities understand how schools and districts are supporting student success.
School and district information includes measures such as student achievement, student growth, attendance, graduation rates, and other indicators that provide a more complete picture of school performance.
No single measure tells the whole story of a school. Reviewing multiple sources of information can provide a more complete picture of school performance.
