During the January 2014 School Garden Summit in West Salem, it was suggested by a School Garden Coordinator that area school gardens would feel more connected and be able to get more support if they were a member of a local support group.
So, our first pilot regional school garden hub was formed in the Albany area. This pilot group has met approximately every other month, and has been able to do cross-visitations, tour other gardens in the State, and plan an upcoming "back to school" open house event at their gardens this Fall where they will invite the local media, as well as their School Board.
In 2018, the Oregon Farm to School Network expanded the Hub model to include Procurement Hubs (focused on incorporating more local food in school meals) and Education Hubs (focused on both farm and school garden based education).
If your area is interested in forming a School Garden Hub, please contact Rick Sherman at Rick Sherman. He would love to help you get started and plan your first meeting! For more information about OFSSGN’s Regional Procurement and Education Hubs contact Megan.
