All students can earn college credit before graduation from high school. College Credit in high school helps students prepare and plan for their future.
Oregon’s Vision for College Credit in High School
In support of the state’s education and workforce goals, every student in Oregon will have access to college credit in high school.
In these courses, students will build skills, gain confidence, and get a head start on their path after high school.
Through intentional partnerships, high schools, colleges, and universities will create purposeful career and college experiences that reduce the cost of college and encourage students to imagine and plan for their future.
Why College Credit in High School?
When students take a college class while they are in high school, they get the opportunity to earn credit towards a postsecondary degree or credential while still in high school. Research shows that taking college credit classes in high school helps students thrive after graduation (Arneson et al., 2020; Hodara & Pierson, 2018).
Earning college credit in high school gives students the opportunity to align their coursework with their broader academic and career goals (i.e. as identified in their education plan and profile), receive support services from their school and college, and build the necessary skills and mindsets to be successful in college and careers.
This toolkit provides information about college in high school programs for students and families, and for the people in schools and colleges who teach, advise, and support students. Use the information in this toolkit to help students get started on college credit while in high school, make informed decisions, and plan for after high school graduation.
The toolkit has three sections: For Students and Families, for K12 Educators, and for College Educators. Click on the links below to learn more.
