Welcome to the Oregon State Board of Education

The State Board Education is composed of nine voting members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Oregon Senate. Membership must include a resident from each of Oregon’s six congressional districts with the other three positions from the state at-large. At least one at-large member must be a licensed and practicing teacher and one must be a classified staff person in a district. Members serve four-year terms and are limited to two consecutive full terms. You can learn more about the current Board members on our Board Member page. The State Board of Education’s primary responsibility is the adoption of Oregon Administrative Rules that govern Oregon’s K-12 education system. Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) make up the regulations that state agencies adopt to carry out statutes from the Legislature. The State Board of Education traditionally meets during the school year on the third Thursday of each month. The Board posts a public notice approximately one week before each Board meeting that includes the time, date, location, and tentative agenda for that Board meeting. The Board uses a website called BoardBook to host its meeting-related materials, including meeting agendas, previously adopted rules, public comments received, and meeting recordings. Members of the public are welcome to review Board materials and observe Board meetings using our livestream. The Board also maintains a public comment process that allows members of the public to provide testimony on items before the Board or to raise issues to the attention of the Board and Agency Director.
