The Oregon Department of Education is working to expand access to timely, accurate, and actionable information to support shared accountability and informed decision-making across Oregon’s education system. The ultimate goal is to foster trust, strengthen engagement, and promote transparency by ensuring that families, educators, and communities have clear, accessible insights into student outcomes, district performance, and the supports and resources available to schools and learners.
Key agency actions include publishing an annual performance report that compares district progress against growth targets, enhancing grant budget reporting systems, and developing dashboards that integrate academic and financial data.
Moving Toward Greater Public Transparency
Currently, ODE publishes financial and academic data once a year. However, that data is made available in Excel spreadsheets, which are not accessible to all, and there is a lack of sufficient context. Communities lack clarity on how funds are being used and do not have access to financial or academic data presented in a way they can easily understand; policymakers don’t have clear sightline into funding levels, student outcomes, or the connection between the two; and districts experience difficulty in long-term planning in the absence of current data.
ODE’s goal is to provide data that updates regularly, making it easier for the public to access the most current information, with data that is structured longitudinally, allowing viewers to analyze trends over time and better understand long-term impacts and outcomes. Ultimately, ODE will provide tailored views and insights for different audiences – whether it's a parent checking their child’s school performance, a community member exploring local outcomes, or a legislator comparing trends across districts. With dollars tied to programs and outcomes, ODE will create public-facing and accessible dashboards to show spending impact, leading to greater trust, fewer delays and better decisions.
