Scoring Reading Work Samples - Workshop Materials

Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4

Design for Workshops

  • Level 1 - Overview: A 30 - 45 minute* broad, general workshop for designed to be presented by a local facilitator to a wide variety of audiences including teachers, administrators, school board, parents and community groups.
  • Level 2 - Introduction to Using the Reading Scoring Guide: A 90 minute - 2 hour* workshop designed to be presented by a local facilitator to high school teachers, both English Language Arts Teachers and content area teachers.
  • Level 3 - In-depth Training on Using the Reading Scoring Guide: Contains two 3 - 4 hour workshops, one for English Language Arts teachers and one for content area teachers. Both are designed to be presented by a local facilitator to high school teachers.
  • Level 4 - In-depth Training on Creating Reading Work Samples: A 3.5 - 4 hour workshop designed to be presented by a local facilitator to high school and/or middle school teachers, both English Language Arts and content area teachers.

Level 1 - Overview

Focus of Workshops

  • Understand the requirement for proficiency in the Essential Skill of Reading to earn a diploma
  • Understand the 3 options to demonstrate proficiency (OAKS, approved standardized tests, and work samples)
  • Understand what a work sample looks like and experience applying the scoring guide to 2 student work samples

Level 2 - Introduction for High School Teachers

Focus of Workshops

  • Awareness of Oregon requirements for the Essential Skill of Reading and high school diploma
  • Understanding of Official Oregon Reading Scoring Guide
  • Practice applying Scoring Guide to 3 sample student papers
  • Awareness of different types and uses of classroom assessments (including a basic reading assessment plan).

Level 3 - In-Depth Practice for High School Teachers

Focus of Workshops

  • Understanding of Adolescent Literacy and impact of the CCSS & Oregon Literacy Framework
  • Understanding of different types and uses of classroom assessments
  • Understanding of using reading assessment data and progress monitoring to improve high school achievement in reading for all students
  • Review of requirements for Essential Skill of Reading
  • In-depth understanding of Official Oregon Reading Scoring Guide
  • Practice applying Scoring Guide to 10 samples student papers with emphasis on accuracy
  • Awareness of Common Core State Standards for Literacy and increased student requirements for text complexity

Level 4 – Developing Reading Work Samples for High School and Middle School Teachers

Focus of Workshops

  • Selecting grade appropriate reading material for work samples
  • Knowing the key elements in a good reading work sample
  • Creating a work sample that is complete and ready to use
