Physical Education

Every student, every day, is engaged in meaningful, affirming, grade-level instruction.

ODE Standards Logo

In accordance with ORS 329.045 and OAR 581-022-2030, in 2025, the Oregon State Board of Education formally adopted Content Standards for Physical Education.

The Oregon Physical Education Standards provide a coherent set of expectations for the knowledge, skills, and practices that students develop throughout their education. Grounded in research and informed by community input, the standards are aligned to SHAPE America’s National Physical Education Standards (2024) and Oregon’s Transformative SEL Standards. The standards are organized across four domains: Developing a variety of motor skills (DMS); applying knowledge related to movement and fitness concepts; developing social skills through movement (SSM); and developing personal skills, identifying personal benefits of movement, and choosing to engage in physical activity (SMC). Together, these domains support students in becoming confident, capable, and engaged participants in lifelong physical activity.

These standards reflect Oregon’s commitment to equity, excellence, and access for every student and serve as the foundation for instruction, assessment, and high-quality instructional materials selection and implementation.

Grounded in this foundation, Oregon’s required Transformative SEL Standards and Tribal History/Shared History curriculum are to be integrated alongside Physical Education standards to create the conditions for learning and thriving and ensuring the histories, cultures, contributions, and sovereignty of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribal Nations are taught accurately and with integrity.

ODE is currently reviewing instructional materials submitted for the Physical Education High-Quality Instructional Materials Adoption. The review process will take place throughout the summer, with the adopted materials announced in fall 2026.
