Assessment and Accountability Update

March 28, 2024

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Practice Brief: Local Performance Assessments (REPEAT)

Performance-based assessments are a vital component of a district’s balanced assessment system. OAR 581-022-0615 requires public school districts and charter schools to administer Local Performance Assessments (LPAs) in grades 3-8 and once in high school in the content areas of writing, speaking, mathematical problem solving, and scientific inquiry. This two-page Practice Brief is designed to help educators and leaders take a student-centered approach to meeting the requirements of the policy by understanding the benefits of performance-based assessments, how to use district-adopted instructional materials as a source of LPAs, and how to use a single task across multiple content areas. Contact the ODE Assessment Team with questions or for more information.

New Teacher Center (NTC) and Smarter Balanced Professional Learning Series (REPEAT)

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is excited to announce a professional learning series developed in partnership by the New Teacher Center (NTC) and Smarter Balanced. This collaborative initiative is designed to help district teams create a system of interim and formative assessment practices customized to their local needs. Smarter Balanced resources, including Tools for Teachers and the Interim Assessment Blocks within the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS), will be utilized as connections are made between instruction and assessment.

Each team will consist of two teacher cohorts from grades 3-8 (one ELA and one Math) and work directly with NTC throughout the 2024-25 school year. More information, including FAQ and registration details, can be found in the recruitment flier. Registration remains open through April 5, 2024.

On-Demand Course: Effectively Using OSAS Results (REPEAT)

As the OSAS summative test window fully opens this spring, ODE has partnered with Southern Oregon ESD to create an on-demand asynchronous professional learning course to help district leaders, school administrators, and teachers use their OSAS results effectively. The course, Effectively Using OSAS Results, consists of five one-hour modules delivered through Canvas. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the following key concepts:

  • Understanding OSAS test design is key to understanding how to use OSAS test results.
  • Student performance across assessment targets, not overall proficiency rates, provides the most helpful data for use in continuous improvement.
  • Trends in target results can inform curriculum planning, instructional pacing, and professional learning.
  • Connections can be made between assessment targets and standards that can help educators implement powerful formative assessment practices in the classroom.

The course is available now at no cost to Oregon educators. Details and registration can be found here.

ACCOUNTABILITY & REPORTING

Error in the Course Code List

An error in documenting the course code for AP Pre-Calculus was discovered this week. The course code was listed as “2214” in the Adopted SCED Course Codes when it should have been 2114. This led to one district having errors when trying to upload their Instructional Unit Identifier (IUID) file. We are updating the documentation on the district website for 2023-24 and 2024-25 to resolve this issue. Please contact Robin Stalcup or Ryan Clark, Research Analysts and Data Owners for IUID, and Staff Assignment and Class Roster, respectively, with any questions.

Staff Assignment Collection is Open

The Staff Assignment Collection opened up on March 21, and it will remain open through April 29, 2024. During this collection window, please submit your staff assignment data. A training took place on Thursday, March 7. The Staff FTE, Staff Ethnicity, and Staff Retention and Teacher Experience validations all open March 28 at 1:00 PM. The validations will remain open through April 29. Please log in during this window to review the data you submitted to the Staff Position collection. A training took place on Thursday, March 14. A link to the recorded video of the training is available on the Staff Position Collection page along with other helpful resources, such as the Staff Position Manual and the Staff Validation Guidance documents.
