Mathematics Local Performance Assessments

Overview

A Mathematics Local Performance Assessment is required to be administered for students in grades 3 through 8 and at least once in high school (OAR 581-22-0615).

Local Performance Assessments will more effectively support student learning when they are integrated systematically into the district curriculum and are also part of classroom instruction and may be offered multiple times during the school year.

Mathematics Local Performance Assessments

A math performance assessment is a method used to evaluate an individual's ability to apply mathematical concepts and practices aligned to Oregon’s Mathematics Standards. In a math performance assessment, individuals are typically asked to perform tasks responding to real world tasks and apply their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Performance assessments must be a standardized measure.  (e.g., activity, exercise, problem, or work sample scored by a common scoring instrument, such as the official state scoring guides or another scoring guide adopted by the district) that is embedded in the school curriculum and evaluates the application of students’ knowledge and skills. For local performance assessments, districts may locally develop scoring guidelines so that they can provide feedback to students, or they may use the Official State Mathematics Scoring Guide.

  • Districts have substantial flexibility when it comes to planning the performance assessments that will be used to fulfill this requirement. Educators can observe and evaluate various aspects of the individual's mathematical skills as aligned to the math performance tasks.
  • Guidance in the Practice Brief: Local Performance Assessments describes other common sources that can be used for math performance assessments.

To support students, teachers, administrators, and parents, ODE has provided additional links to mathematics performance assessment resources. The accordions below provides additional links for useful resources (i.e., scoring guides, guidance resources, and professional development resources).

Scoring Guide: For local performance assessments, districts may use the Official State Scoring Guides or locally develop scoring guidelines in alignment with high-quality instruction materials.

  • Official Math Scoring Guide (High School): This scoring guide reflects the high school expectations for college and career readiness.
  • Condensed/Student Language Scoring Guide: These scoring guides are intended to be used with students in grades 3 – 8. They represent a condensed version of the Official Math Scoring Guide to better communicate problem-solving expectations using grade-level appropriate student language.
Feedback Form: In addition to using the Official Math Scoring Guide or Condensed/Student Language Scoring Guide, educators can use the following forms to provide additional feedback to students.

Mathematics Problem-Solving Tips: The following document can be used by students as they learn and become familiar with the Official Math Scoring Guide: Problem-Solving

Math Local Performance Assessment Tasks

The previous links and files were deactivated since they contained outdated samples and had some alignment concerns. At this time, there are no updated performance assessments; therefore, in the meantime, we recommend visiting the Smarter Balanced Sample Items. You can use the advanced filter options to explore different claims and select Performance Task items to find aligned examples and student tasks. However, also know that performance-based activities, tasks, or assessments included in your district-adopted high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) meet the definition of an LPA in OAR 581-022-0615.
