In accordance with
ORS 329.045, in 2026, the Oregon State Board of Education formally adopted Content Standards for English Lanaguge Arts.
The Oregon English Language Arts Standards provide a coherent set of expectations for the knowledge, skills, and practices that students will develop throughout their education. Grounded in research and informed by community input, the standards reflect national research and best practices, including the science of reading, and are informed by Oregon's Early and Adolescent Literacy Frameworks. They are based on evidence of how students develop literacy, particularly in foundational reading skills, reading literature and informational texts, writing, language development, and speaking and listening, with the goal of ensuring all students graduate proficient in literacy skills.
These standards reflect Oregon's committment to equity, excellence, and access for every student and serve as the foundation for high-quality instructional materials selection and implementation, instruciton and assessment.
Grounded in this foundation, Oregon's required
Transformative SEL Standards and
Tribal History/Shared History curriculum are to be integrated alongside ELA standards to create the conditions for learning and thriving and ensuring the histories, cultures, contributions, and sovereignty of Oregon's nine federally recognized Tribal Nations are taught accurately and with integrity.
The Oregon Department of Education is accepting applications through September 28, 2026 for the English Language Arts (ELA) Instructional Materials Criteria Development Committee.
Committee members will review and provide input on the draft K–12 English Language Arts instructional materials adoption criteria. These criteria will guide the review of ELA instructional materials to ensure alignment with the 2026 K-12 English Language Arts and Literacy Standards. Final criteria will be presented to the Oregon State Board of Education for adoption
District administrators and supervisors are highly encouraged to share the application with teachers, curriculum specialists, or other experienced professionals with expertise in English Language Arts for grades K-12.
Committee members who fully participate in the committee process will receive a $500 honorarium, as well as up to 18 PDUs in recognition of their time and expertise. For more information about meeting dates, format, and expectations for participation, please see this one page overview.
