Computer code floating
Overview

In May 2022, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) received a directive to develop a statewide implementation plan for computer science education to ensure access to comprehensive computer science education opportunities to every public school student in this state by the 2027-2028 school year.

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission are pleased to share a Preview Draft of Oregon's Computer Science Education Statewide Implementation Plan

The Executive Summary is also available in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Chuukese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese

This plan is grounded in the belief that a basic understanding of computer science is vital for all Oregon students. The purpose of this Draft Preview is to give students, educators, community members, higher education and workforce representatives another opportunity to provide feedback prior to the final publication of the plan.

Sharing this Draft Preview marks an important milestone toward the goal of broadening access, participation, and engagement in computer science education for every public school student. Detailed in this draft plan are:
  • recommended strategies
  • measures for monitoring progress
  • considerations that provide context and details
  • a potential timeline, and
  • a discussion of funding.
Please keep in mind that this plan is in draft form and the final release will likely look different than this draft version as feedback is received and considered.

Statewide Engagement
ODE and the HECC engaged with more than 700 Oregonians and collected more than 1800 comments and feedback through extensive listening sessions with teachers, students, community members, administrators, higher-education representatives, and industry professionals. The engagements occurred in three phases.
Phase I focused on listening sessions with
culturally specific organizations, education partners, families, and career-connected partners from December 2022 to April 2023. This phase also included an online survey.

Phase II focused on gathering feedback on the initial Outcomes and Strategies that arose from the conversations during Phase I.

Phase III featured a Draft Preview of the plan and a survey to provide feedback.
