Resources for Section 504 Coordinators

Each recipient of federal funds, including public school districts and public charter schools, must designate at least one employee to coordinate their compliance with Section 504, known as the 504 Coordinator (34 CFR 104.7)*.

Designated 504 Coordinators and designees (504 case managers) are encouraged to join ODE’s 504 Coordinator and Case Manger Listserv to stay up to date on information, resources, and training opportunities.

What is the role of the 504 Coordinator?

A 504 Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the public school district or public charter school complies with Section 504. This includes:
  • Coordinating and monitoring the district’s compliance with Section 504 as well as state civil rights requirements regarding discrimination and harassment based on disability;
  • Overseeing prevention efforts to avoid Section 504 violations from occurring;
  • Implementing the district’s discrimination complaint procedures with respect to allegations of Section 504 violations, discrimination based on disability, and disability harassment; and
  • Investigating or overseeing investigations of complaints alleging violations of Section 504, discrimination based on disability, and disability harassment.
  • Overseeing the implementation of any measures put into place as the result of an investigation
  • Note, this may be different than the role of the 504 case manager who may be facilitating Section 504 processes for individual students.
34 CFR 104.8* requires public school districts and public charter schools to post a notice that the district or school does not discriminate on the basis of disability and the contact information of the designated 504 Coordinator.
