Tools and Resources for Students' Wellbeing

Care System Tools

    • Many needs may appear in a student's life which will impact their ability to access their education. Some needs, like individualized chronic care, are met through clearly scoped roles. However, many aspects of community care are interconnected and locally dependent. Attending to these needs can reinforce school health standards. This crosswalk defines the broad categories of community care and illustrates the interconnected nature between belonging and wellness and academic success.

    • Empathy Interview Staff Preparation Template
    • School-Based Empathy Interview Template
    • An empathy interview is a short series of open-ended questions where the goal is to explore a subject’s experience of a topic by invoking stories which can be relayed into themes. Conducting empathy interviews at your school can lead to system change, process improvement, direct needs addressed, and an increase of trust between the interviewed students and the school, by giving them a space to speak their experiences to staff, in a healthy environment.

Mental Health and Wellness Strategies to Support Students Impacted by Immigration Activity

The increase in immigration enforcement activity across Oregon has created an environment of profound uncertainty and fear for many students and families. Students, families and school staff may be experiencing social, emotional, and physical responses such as stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance, in response to increased immigration enforcement.

The resource below has been translated into nine common languages of Oregon and provides strategies for responding to the increase of stress and distress students and families may be facing. These strategies were centrally developed with input from the Latino/a/x community and may be particularly useful to district and schools' leadership. However, these strategies are available for all to use, whether for your own support or for best practices to support the communities around you.
